I was ready to embark on a journey into the absolute unknown…..
Getting out of Australia was so stressful. Despite doing my homework on airlines, it still proved challenging. I was already stressed to the hilt, the weeks leading up to this moment had physically and mentally exhausted me. My beautiful daughter who had been an absolute godsend in helping me was also ready to collapse emotionally, so not being allowed on the domestic leg due to a minor technicality, broke us both. We had already arrived at the airport at 3am due to a possible problem with the flight so we were already exhausted.
Anyway, I pulled myself together after a short time and waited for flight centre to open in the hope that they may be able to help me even though I hadn’t booked through them. As luck would have it I met the nicest and most helpful person you could believe. A big shout out to you Troy. Troy helped me in every way possible, even staying on hold with Air Canada for 4 hours. I managed to get the same flight out on Thursday, even with a small refund as there were no economy plus seats available on this flight. I was so relieved and full of gratitude to this angel that did not need to help me but did. Once more, another step closer.
Thursday came around quickly, my nerves were on end having to go through this again was taking its toll. I decided to stay in the city close to the airport this time, as I could not put my daughter through the stress of going through this process once more. Once again, the domestic leg needed clarification that I could fly with them despite it being attached to an international carrier that did not have a vaccination mandate. Anyway, I did get on the flight and the whole experience was exhausting. I was rung out completely. All I was praying for was to get my feet on the ground in Mexico, I just needed it to be over. If this was to be the future of flying I wanted no part of it.
I did arrive in Mexico and was directed through customs with absolute ease, receiving my 6 month tourist visa without any problems at all. The biggest breath left me at this point and I think I could have collapsed to the floor where I stood as my body slumped in absolute exhaustion and exhilaration.
I had a night in Mexico City before catching a night first class bus the next day. I didn’t have time to sight see, however I did manage to catch up with a friend that I had previously found out had married and moved there. A beautiful connection and a positive experience to start my journey and carry me forward and onto Oaxaca City.
My beautiful landlady Roci came to get me and my two suitcases of possessions and take me to my new home. I was not disappointed. I could not have picked any better to begin my new journey from. I was so happy and exhausted but sleep was to wait as Roci gave me a tour of the Casa and then bundled me back into the car for a quick tour and to pick up some fresh produce. I learned that she was “awake” as were her children and she knew all the best fresh food and organic produce places. Seriously, what a find especially booking blind. Haha, no coincidences though, only synchronicities.
What I saw was beautiful. The wide streets, beautifully lined with green trees and much colour, old churches and many buildings to explore. Many options for fresh and organic produce and gluten free bread options available. I enjoyed my first taste of Oaxacan food, a fresh tostada, cooked and filled at one of the many fresh food markets before heading home to unpack and get some much needed rest.
